Streamlining Student Success: Implementing Onboarding and Project Tracking in SUClassroom

The Problem

As the SUClassroom project grew, we encountered a bottleneck in the user journey: new members struggled to find their footing, and student project management lacked a centralized, structured workflow. We needed a robust way to guide users through their first steps while simultaneously tracking project progression in a way that felt intuitive rather than administrative.

The Approach

To bridge this gap, we focused on two pillars: a structured onboarding flow and a unified data schema for student projects.

Building the Onboarding Flow

We implemented a multi-step onboarding process using React components and Zod for schema validation. By ensuring that every user's entry point is validated before it hits our backend, we reduced state inconsistencies.

// Example of our onboarding schema validation
import { z } from 'zod';

const OnboardingSchema = z.object({
  displayName: z.string().min(2),
  role: z.enum(['student', 'mentor']),
  projectInterest: z.string().optional(),
});

Standardizing Project Data

For the backend, we utilized Drizzle ORM to manage project states. This allowed us to treat project status transitions as atomic database operations, ensuring that the student, the project, and the timeline remained in sync.

-- Defining the project state in our database
CREATE TABLE student_projects (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
  owner_id UUID NOT NULL,
  title TEXT NOT NULL,
  status TEXT CHECK (status IN ('draft', 'active', 'completed')),
  created_at TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE DEFAULT NOW()
);

Key Technical Decisions

We relied on a Middleware pattern to guard the onboarding routes. By intercepting requests, we could seamlessly redirect users to the onboarding flow if they hadn't completed their profiles, protecting the rest of the application without cluttering our primary routes.

Takeaway

By leveraging structured validation and type-safe database schemas, we turned a chaotic onboarding process into a predictable, scalable system. If you are building a multi-step user flow, start by defining your Zod schemas first—they will act as the single source of truth for both your frontend forms and your backend API responses.
