Simplifying User Registration: Removing OAuth Friction

Rethinking Authentication Flow

Sometimes, the most complex solution isn't the best one for your user experience. In the sucommunity-space/plataformaTISNET project, we recently re-evaluated our authentication strategy. We decided to move away from third-party OAuth providers and return to a more direct, data-focused registration process by mandating a phone number input.

The Motivation for Change

While OAuth providers offer convenience, they can sometimes introduce unexpected friction or dependency bloat in specific community-driven applications. By removing Google-based authentication, we simplify our backend logic and gain more control over the user data acquisition process at the point of entry.

Collecting a phone number directly during sign-up allows us to ensure that every user record meets our communication standards immediately, rather than waiting to collect that information via post-registration prompts.

Implementation Strategy

Transitioning from an OAuth-centric model to a standard form-based registration requires careful handling of user state in your Flask application. We updated our routes to remove the redirect logic associated with OAuth and replaced it with a traditional POST handler that validates the mandatory phone field.

Updated Registration Logic

@app.route('/register', methods=['POST'])
def register():
    phone = request.form.get('phone')
    if not phone or len(phone) < 10:
        flash('A valid phone number is required.')
        return redirect(url_for('register_page'))
    # Proceed with local user creation
    save_user(phone)
    return redirect(url_for('dashboard'))

User Interface Adjustments

On the front end, this change meant updating our HTML templates to ensure the phone field is marked as required. This provides immediate feedback to the user before the request even reaches the server, improving the overall UX.

<form action="/register" method="POST">
  <label for="phone">Mobile Number:</label>
  <input type="tel" id="phone" name="phone" required>
  <button type="submit">Register</button>
</form>

Conclusion

Simplifying your registration flow can lead to clearer data models and a more predictable onboarding journey. By removing unnecessary external dependencies like OAuth, you reduce your technical surface area and force an explicit engagement with your users from the very first interaction.

Next time you review your sign-up flow, ask yourself: is the convenience of an external provider outweighing the benefit of owning the data collection process? Sometimes, simple form validation is all you need.
